From Monday 4 August sexual health services across the UK are providing the Bexsero vaccine, which offers protection against the transmission of gonorrhoea.
Bexsero is a vaccine which is primarily designed for protection against meningococcal group B (MenB) disease. The bacteria which causes MenB and gonorrhoea share a high level of similarity, so Bexsero can also offer some protection against gonorrhoea.
The vaccine is initially available to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) due to their higher risk of contracting gonorrhoea.
Appointments are now available at axess sexual health for our patients to receive their vaccine.
Dr Martyn Wood, Specialty Clinical Director at axess sexual health, said:
“The gonorrhoea vaccine is another useful tool obtainable to our service users to help protect their sexual health.
With cases of gonorrhoea increasing nationwide, it’s imperative that we use innovative, proven techniques to improve the sexual health and wellbeing of people across the country.
We are proud to say that axess is one of many sexual health services in the UK offering the gonorrhoea vaccine to our patients as soon as we were able to.”
