Advice to patients who run out of ART whilst abroad

Due to the current disruption to flights affecting Middle East and Asia, some people may find their return flights to the UK delayed and worry about running out of HIV medication/antiretroviral therapy (ART). If you think you might run out of ART before you get home, the easiest option is usually to get a temporary supply of medication locally.

Many countries in Asia and the Middle East have good HIV services and can provide antiretroviral therapy (ART). The medication you receive might look slightly different from your usual treatment (for example, it may come as separate tablets instead of a single‑tablet combination) but it will work in the same way.

To help a local doctor or pharmacist identify the right medicines, please take any of the following with you if possible:

  • Your medication bottle or packaging (even if empty)
  • A photo of the label on your medication
  • A recent clinic letter (we can provide you a pdf of this via email if needed).

If you are asked to provide a copy prescription, please contact us.

Getting medication locally is generally quicker and more reliable than trying to have medicines posted internationally. Many countries have strict rules about importing medication, and parcels are often delayed or stopped by customs.

If you have travel insurance, it’s worth contacting your provider as they may be able to help.
